Calligraphy inkstone decorated with crane and trees.
East Asian inkstones are mortars used to grind solid inks (inksticks) with water and contain the final liquid inks. The grinding surface is slanting so freshly made ink flows done to one side were it will not evaporate as quickly as on a flat surface. Thousands of years ago these kind of stones were used to make dyes. Nowadays, the stones are still used for calligraphy or as decoration.
