Decorated leather opium pillow

These leather pillows or neck supports were used by wealthy people on their opium beds. Public opium dens or less wealthy opium smokers used a variety of other kinds of pillows, made of wood or earthenware.

This beautifully preserved, authentic red leather pillow comes from Fujian province in China. It still has all the original lacquer and black decoration at the top and sides in top condition! The chrysanthemum flowers in the middle and the flowers and Chinese characters at the sides are clear with minimal cracking in the lacquer. The underlying leather is in a very good state. Combine with other pillows or red elements for maximal decorative impact!
