Red leather opium pillow

These leather pillows or neck supports were used by wealthy people on their opium beds. Public opium dens or less wealthy opium smokers used a variety of other kinds of pillows, made of wood or earthenware.

This authentic bright red leather neck pillow comes from Fujian province in China. It still has all the original lacquer and black decoration with Chinese characters at the sides. The lacquer is wonderfully preserved and only weathered smooth and thin at the edges. Very original as a red decorative element in the house.
