Long leather opium pillow
These leather pillows or neck supports were used by wealthy people on their opium beds. Public opium dens or less wealthy opium smokers used a variety of other kinds of pillows, made of wood or earthenware.
This long and authentic red leather neck pillow comes from Fujian province in China. It still has all the original lacquer and black decoration at the edges and sides. At the sides the image of bamboo and Chinese characters is cleary visible. Even though the lacquer is weathered by time, especially at the edges, it is very nicely preserved for a much used pillow. This bright red, with a warm undertone, decoration looks beautiful in combination with other, smaller opium pillows.
